This program is the only program in Australia for public health professionals that achieves a nationally endorsed unit of competence. It embraces the four phases of emergency management: prevention, preparedness, response and recovery.
The purpose of this program is to assist public health professionals to anticipate emergency management problems, and put into place possible solutions to minimise the impact of an emergency on the affected community.



Who should participate?

Personnel with a public health background or an interest in public health, such as Environmental Health Officers, Public Health Medical and Nursing Practitioners, other Allied Health Professionals and Community Service Personnel.

Content
1.  Develop a council plan to respond to an emergency situation
2.  Undertake a preparedness program
3.  Activate council public health emergency management plan
4.  Undertake public health emergency management recovery

Learning Outcomes
On completion of the program participants should be able to:
• identify roles and responsibilities of emergency personnel;
• identify strategies for prevention;
• carry out a simple hazard and community analysis;
• outline the components of a municipal public health emergency plan;
• prepare appropriate information to address community concerns post disaster;
• conduct a public health assessment;
• identify the effects of trauma on disaster affected persons;
• prepare a basic media release;
• create and issue a situation report; and,
• coordinate a response to an emergency from a public health perspective.

Assessment and Certification
Participants will be required to successfully complete assessment tasks, both individually and in group syndicates, culminating in a desktop simulated emergency exercise.
Participants will be required to successfully complete all assessment tasks in order to be awarded a Statement of Attainment.

This unit of competency is included in Advanced Diploma of Local Government (Environmental Health and Regulation) LGA60300 .
This unit may also be included in other qualifications and the Training Packages/qualifications of other industries.
