The damaging effects of the cyclone included a 3m storm surge at Wunjunga on Upstart Bay (on 4/4/89), causing the destruction of holiday homes and one death when an elderly man drowned after his caravan was swept away near Wolonglo Beach, 50km south of Home Hill. With wind gusts around 180km/h, TC Aivu caused serious damage to over 50 houses and other buildings at Ayr, Home Hill and Clare and $M90 damage occurred to sugar cane crops alone (uninsured - 1989$). It was also followed by heavy flooding in the Pioneer and Proserpine Rivers as the cyclone degenerated into a low pressure rain depression.
