  Details
Cyclone 'Charlie' affected the Ayr region causing some structural damage (4 houses partly unroofed & others with smashed windows) but the main damage to buildings was due to flood waters up to 2m deep which submerged many houses in the town. A man drowned near Sarina.

The sugar cane crop was badly damaged by wind and water largely contributing to a total agricultural loss of almost $20m (Dec1998 values). Beach erosion occurred between Bowen and Townsville and at Beachmont a dune breach allowed tidal innundation over 1800 ha of grazing land.
