TC Kathy, a category 5 cyclone, caused a man to drown when a trawler sank .Two people were left stranded on rocks. Wind gusts measured at 232 km/h. Huge seas in the Gulf of Carpentaria. TC Kathy crossed the Gulf and, even after travelling 100km inland, sustained moderate to severe wind damage on the settlement of Borroloola. The cyclone also produced a 4.2 metre storm surge (measured at Vanderlin Island) which washed turtles, dugongs and other marine life up to 7km inland from the coast of the Gulf of Carpentaria. (* Insurance payments mainly covered marine craft and loss of profits.) The Sir Edward Pellew Islands were devastated. Sea turtles were stranded up to 7km inland near the McArthur River.
