Beginning 24 December, the fringe of TC Joy brought torrential rain. North Queensland airports were closed as widespread wind damage and extensive coastal flooding (including many homes and businesses in Rockhampton) occurred in Dec 1990 and Jan 1991 (see 'Related events' for flood impacts).
Large crop losses were also incurred. In early 1991 Cairns, Townsville, Mackay and Rockhampton were declared disaster areas.
