The Neva, a female convict ship, with Captain Peck, left Cork (Ireland) on 8 January, 1835, bound to Sydney. The Neva had 241 passengers and crew. The voyage had proceeded smoothly until about 2am on Wednesday, 13th May, the man on the lookout discovered land in sight, and about 4am, a reef of rocks suddenly appeared right ahead of the Neva. Orders were instantly given to tack about, but while yet in stays, the Neva struck and unshipped the rudder. The Neva then became unmanageable and was wrecked about 90 miles off King Island, drowning the 241 crew and passengers.
