TC Fifi moved down the coast and became a low pressure system, bringing high winds to half the State. It left an estimated 100,000 homes without power, caused numerous road accidents (resulting in two deaths) and sparked over 40 scrub and telegraph pole fires, plus three larger fires at York, Mandurah and Hervey.
About 65 homes partly unroofed in the Perth metropolitan area, while in the Swan River, dozens of boats slipped their moorings and many ran aground.
At Jurien Bay, on the central coastal area north of Perth, a 15m fishing boat was capsized by a large wave and three people were rescued.
The additional 27 deaths occurred at sea when the bulk ore ship, the 140,000 tonne 'Mineral Diamond' sank off the WA coast in huge seas. |
