A cyclone, with winds estimated at 175 km/h caused 40 deaths and widespread destruction in the Broome region.  Twenty houses were destroyed, another 20 were seriously damaged and a further 50 partially damaged.  The housing damage was estimated at 20,000 pounds.  Thangoo and Enjadine stations sustained major damage.  Thirty-four pearling boats were wrecked or sunk and a further 67 were blown ashore.  The schooner Eclipse was wrecked on Cable Beach.
