Broome and other parts of the north-west coast (on and offshore) were badly affected by a cyclone on 26 March.  The pearling fleet at the Lacepede Islands was devastated and 141 people died.  In Broome, one house was destroyed and the ice works and four hotels were damaged.  The power system failed, trees were blown down and pearling camps demolished.
