The Attorney-General’s Department provides funding through the Indigenous Justice Program to help respond to the urgent challenge of the disproportionately high rates of Indigenous offending and incarceration, and to support the realisation of safer communities.
The objective of the Program is to reduce recidivisim by rehabilitating those in prison or youth detention or diverting offenders from further contact with the criminal justice system.
The Program complements the Department’s other Indigenous law and justice programs—such as the Indigenous Legal Aid and Policy Reform Program and the Family Violence Prevention Legal Services Program—and seeks to fund projects that will lessen the need for legal aid.
The Department is developing new 2012-13 Program Guidelines and does not intend to hold a funding round for the 2012-13 year due to the number of multi-year funding agreements in place for this period. The Department will consider extending funding into 2012-13 for existing grantees whose funding expires on 30 June 2012 and who demonstrate achievement of satisfactory outcomes in 2011-12.
The Department does intend to hold a funding round for the 2013-14 year. This is likely to include the opportunity to apply for multi-year funding. Further information on this round will be placed on the website towards the end of 2012.
