AusCheck is a branch of the National Security Law and Policy Division within the Australian Attorney-General's Department.
AusCheck undertakes background checking services for the Aviation Security Identification Card (ASIC), Maritime Security Identification Card (MSIC), and National Health Security (NHS) Check regimes.
In addition, AusCheck provides the Government with policy advice on background checking and related matters, in conjunction with other Divisions in the Department.
On 5 December 2005, the Government agreed to the establishment of a background checking unit - now referred to as AusCheck.
AusCheck operates as a branch in the National Security Law and Policy Division within the Commonwealth Attorney-General’s Department.
Under the AusCheck Act 2007 and relevant regulations, AusCheck determines whether a person is eligible to hold an ASIC, MSIC or access Security Sensitive Biological Agents (SSBAs) or facilities where SSBAs are handled in relation to relevant ‘disqualifying offences’ and other checks.
AusCheck is responsible for identifying individuals who should not be eligible to access National Heath, Aviation or Maritime facilities subject to relevant regulations.
AusCheck applies a consistent interpretation of statutory requirements, coordinates criminal and security checks on applicants and notifies the relevant bodies on the outcome of these checks.
AusCheck maintains a comprehensive database of applicants in accordance with the AusCheck Act 2007 and operates on a cost recovery basis.
