Tsunami – My Assignment
Be on the lookout for a tsunami!
Imagine that you are on holidays and walking along the beach. Suddenly you see that the water is getting sucked-out back into the sea. You see the ocean water go funny and hear a loud rumbling sound.
What should you do?
Your task:
Prepare a page that lists the things you should do when you think a tsunami is approaching.
- What things should you do first?
- Include a list of things that you should never do if a tsunami approaches.
- Include pictures and a map of how you would get to high ground.
Present your page to your class and teacher.
Track a tsunami
Tsunami waves move out from where the sea has been disturbed, similar to the way ripples move away from the place where a rock has been dropped in a pond.
Your task:
Imagine that a severe earthquake has occurred between the Pacific and Nazca Plates – deep in the Pacific Ocean.
As a tsunami expert, you need to map out a possible path of the tsunami. Use the map below to draw:
Use this map to track a tsunami
(see the text on the left for more information)
- Where the waves could spread to?
- What countries could be affected?
- Which countries are closest to the earthquake?
- Is Australia in the line of the waves?
Clue: Watch how a tsunami moves.
To help you predict how the tsunami could move, watch this animation of how the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami spread after an earthquake.
