Disaster Mapper – An interactive resource for schools

The Disaster Mapper aims to improve the presentation of hazard information and increase awareness of disaster events in Australia through improved presentation of hazard information.

The Disaster Mapper is an interactive map of Australia that shows over 50 disaster events that have occurred at different times, ranging from the early 1900s through to the most recent events. Each event is supported by statistics, images, videos and text. The events are searchable by location, time or type of disaster.

By looking at previous disasters, we can better understand and prepare for future events. Students will also be able to develop a greater understanding of how resilient Australian communities have been and will continue to be.

The Disaster Mapper is supported by a teaching guide with lesson plans and activities that enable students and teachers to gain the most from the information available for each disaster event.

The lesson plans and classroom activities are aimed at Years 5 – 10 and all draw on the inquiry process. They have been mapped to the Australian Curriculum.
