Beyond Command and Control - New Leadership for New Crises

Crisis leadership in the twenty-first century cannot ignore the complex political, social, environmental and legal context of crises. Emergency management is as much about networks and relationships as the hard skills required for command and control.

This program is designed to allow senior leaders in emergency management the opportunity to explore the nature of new leadership and to examine their own styles and underpinning assumptions.

Introduction to Emergency Management for Local Government

This program has been designed to introduce leaders, employees and elected officials in local government to some of the range of issues and experiences faced by local governments when dealing with emergency management.

Local government is a key player in emergency management. In addition to supporting its community to recover from emergencies, local government have an important role in planning and preparing for emergencies and in undertaking activities to mitigate the effects of emergencies. Along with their broad range of responsibilities, local governments across Australia are attempting to incorporate emergency management activities into their core business. Local government personnel therefore require an understanding of emergency management principles and practices.

Introduction to Emergency Risk Management

Introduction to Emergency Risk Management (ERM) is an online self-paced learning module that introduces the basic concepts of ERM at an introductory level.

The program introduces the concept of risk and the method used to manage emergency level risk in a community environment. It also gives an opportunity to explore and consider some of the many aspects of what can go wrong and the consequences.

Recovery Management Programs

The recovery management is the coordinated process of supporting disaster-affected communities in the reconstruction of the physical infrastructure and the restoration of emotional, social, economic and physical wellbeing. Recovery can provide an opportunity to improve these aspects beyond previous conditions, by enhancing social and natural environments, infrastructure and economies – contributing to a more resilient community. Disaster recovery is part of emergency management, which includes the broader components of prevention, preparedness and response. Planning for recovery is integral to emergency preparation and mitigation actions may often be initiated as part of recovery.

The Recovery Management programs offered by the Australian Emergency Management Institute explore current recovery management principles, practices and ideas, enabling an understanding of the complex and ever changing environment in which recovery managers work.
