Who should participate?

Emergency service/emergency management personnel who may be involved to a significant degree in the design and conduct of emergency management exercises.

Unit descriptor

This unit covers the competency to design and manage activities that exercise elements of emergency management. Exercising is a key part of emergency management. Exercises may be used to train people, to test planning processes, to identify weaknesses and for a variety of other reasons. The design and conduct of an exercise is a systematic process involving planning, documenting, conducting and evaluating.

  1. Determine objectives (for an emergency management exercise)
  2. Design an exercise
  3. Manage an exercise
  4. Evaluate the outcomes of an emergency management exercise.

Assessment and certification

An activity will be set for all participants, which must be completed prior to commencement.

Participants will be required to collect a range of evidence to demonstrate competence. These may include workplace documents, third party reports, on-campus simulations and activities, interview and short work-based projects.

Participants will be required to successfully complete all assessment tasks in order to be awarded a Statement of Attainment.

Prerequisite

In order to successfully complete this program, participants should have a sound working knowledge of the State/Territory emergency management arrangements and the role their particular agency would play in a major emergency.

In addition, attendance at a State/Territory Introduction to Emergency Management course will enable participants to fully participate in the program.

Pathways

This unit of competency is included in the Advanced Diploma of Public Safety (Emergency Management) as an elective.

This unit may also be included in other qualifications in the Public Safety Training Package and the Training Packages/ qualifications of other industries.
