Bushfire Mitigation Program
Fire trails are important resources in the facilitation of prevention and mitigation works. An effective fire trail network increases options available in implementing hazard reduction to protect communities and their social, cultural, environmental and economic assets.
In September 2004 the Prime Minister announced the allocation of $15 million for a Bushfire Mitigation Program (BMP) over three years, for the construction, maintenance and signage of fire trail networks to assist local communities to better prepare for bushfires. Building on the success of the initial three years, on 27 April 2007 the Prime Minister extended the BMP for another four years until 30 June 2011, with $20 million in Australian Government funding available nationally.

From financial year 2009-2010, funding for new bushfire mitigation related projects will only be available under the Natural Disaster Resilience Program (NDRP). The BMP ceased on 30 June 2009 and no further applications under that program will be accepted.
