COAG National Bushfire Inquiry and Response
This Inquiry was announced on 10 October 2003 by the Prime Minister as Chairman of the Council of Australian Governments (COAG).
The terms of reference focused on issues related to bushfire mitigation and management that are of national significance and on opportunities for enhanced cooperation and the adoption of national best practice.
The Inquiry's report and the COAG response were released by the Prime Minister on 24 January 2005.
The report includes 29 recommendations to improve bushfire preparedness. Actions taken to implement COAG responses and/or report recommendations include: continued national funding for fire fighting aircraft and development of agreements for emergency broadcasting with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).
The COAG inquiry took into account the outcomes of some thirteen other inquiries and reviews.
The Ministerial Council for Police and Emergency Management (Emergency Management) oversees implementation of the COAG responses and/or report recommendations.
