Exercise Ausnami 2009 - Australian Tsunami Warning System National Exercise
Following the Indian Ocean tsunami of 26 December 2004, a number of countries around the world, including Australia, increased efforts to monitor, plan and warn for tsunami. The Australian Government committed funding of $68.9 million over four years to upgrade the Australian Tsunami Alert System to an operational, early warning system – the Australian Tsunami Warning System (ATWS).
During this period the Bureau of Meteorology (Bureau), Geoscience Australia (GA) and the Attorney-General’s Department (AGD), have worked with State and Territory governments and other agencies to develop this system.
AGD was tasked with conducting a national level exercise at the end of the four-year program. Exercise Ausnami was conducted on 15 and 16 June 2009 and involved the testing of the communication system used in delivering and managing tsunami warnings for Australia. Exercise Ausnami also enabled State and Territory agencies to test their own arrangements. The ATWS and the collaborative Exercise were a culmination of four years of commitment and complex planning by the Bureau, GA and AGD.
