Bureau of Infrastructure Transport and Regional Economics Natural Disaster Research
The Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics (BITRE) has conducted research into the economic costs of natural disasters and the benefits of flood mitigation in Australia.
The Bureau's findings were published in two reports. Report 103 - Economic Costs of Natural Disasters in Australia found that floods are Australia's most costly disaster type and, on average, cost the Australian community over $300 million each year. Report 106 - Benefits of Flood Mitigation in Australia followed on with an investigation of the costs avoided by Australian flood mitigation projects.
